After the Xbox 360’s RROD (Red Ring of Death) problem that made over a million 360s to go kaput, it seems that it’s now the turn of the Zune to face similar problems.

Users of the 30gb version of the Mp3 player from Microsoft have started complaining that their Zunes simple started restarting and then seized on the startup screen. And it seems that only the 30gb version of Zune is affected and even amongst the 30gb Zunes, certain firmwares ( the older ones, supposedly) are not facing such problems.

Whether the problem is a serious one or not, this is a great blow to Microsoft in its campaign to gain market share against the iPod. Zune is already a ridiculed player, with iPod users even going to the extent of stating that Zune users must be an embarrassed lot. Now that this incident of Zunes freezing up has occured, the odds against Zune becoming a popular mp3 player will raise even further, much to the amusement of the ipPod fanboys (and girls). The Zune player has been pretty innovative and has been a good alternative to the iPod, with the Zune getting some fanboys as well. But this incident will really hamper its progress.

It remains to be seen how Microsoft will react to this problem and how it will go about solving it.
