At a time when Indian mobile users are excitedly awaiting the introduction of 3G in the country, the auction for the 3G spectrum, scheduled for January 15th, has now been postponed to 30th of this month.

This means that 3G would become mainstream in late 2009, at the earliest. This is a huge disappointment for mobile users. State owned MTNL has already started offering 3G services in Delhi and soon other cities will follow. BSNL is also expected to start its 3G services by end of january.

Why the delay? There has already been enough delay in getting 3G to the country and to think that India, one of the fastest growing economies and known for its IT sector, is yet to have 3G is just embarrassing. And to think that the goverment is having vested interests in conducting the auction is all the more painful.Yeah I am making a bold allegation, but our politicians are known for corruption, and no sane mind would think that these politicians are not looking to make some huge money through the auction.

Seems like the winners of the 3G spectrum will also be able to operate in the 2G spectrum. That is a great motive for the bidders. And a even greater motive for our politicians. Lets see how the auction goes. There is bound to be some delays after the auction as well, given our inefficiencies. Dont expect 3G to come anytime soon!
