After releasing an alpha version of its upcoming mobile browser– Fennec — for desktop computers ( yeah, yeah not for a mobile, but for a PC), Mozilla has at last come up with an actual working version of Fennec for Windows Mobile. Although a previous alpha was released for the Nokia 810, that is not a mobile and hence this is the real working mobile version of the browser from the makers of arguably the most popular browser on the internet today.

The browser now comes in the form of a  CAB installer. It includes a mobile version of XULRunner which is used as Fennec’s runtime. Mozilla is also expected to release a port of Fennec for the popular Symbian OS, as well. Despite the growing competition in the web browser market, Fennec can be expected to perform well because of its cousin Firefox’s popularity in the desktop space. Since Fennec will support third-party extensions and plugins, a feature that made Firefox so popular, the browser is bound to have some kind of a following.

It will be interesting to see how browsers like SkyFire and Opera give competition to Fennec. Opera 9.5 is in the works and with widgets and lots of other great stuffs, Opera, the current leader when it comes to the mobile market, may just come out as the winner in the next gen of browsers, as well. Not to mention Opera Mini, the light weight browser for not so high-end phones.
