N97 to N900

I was pretty much awestruck by the N97 when it was announced. It seemed like THE phone for me. It had everything I hoped for and then some more. I have always been a great Nokia / Symbian fan, but that did not blind me from the innovations that were the iPhone and the Android OS — especially the latter, since I do hate the iPhone for its closed nature that Apple believes in.
So, seeing the “smartphone” world race ahead with the touch generation, with Nokia and Symbian being left far behind made me feel left out of the loop, much like any other Symbian fan would have. Then came the Symbian OS 5th edition, the N97, the 5800 and what not and Symbian fans across the world rejoiced.
The release of the much anticipated N97 has come and gone, but the N97 has not reached even half the status as that of an iPhone or even the G1. Why? The answer lies in the OS that N97 has under its hood. The awesome OS that has worked magic for me in the non-touch world is just lagging way behind the iPhone OS and Android. It feels so incapable when you start using it, especially if you have had experienced the power of the Android phones. Sadly, to me atleast, the time has come to say goodbye to Symbian, unless they do something radically different and awesome, now that the Foundation has been established.
The announcement of the N900, to me, is a godsend. With me losing all the hope in Symbian, I did not want to move away from the familiar world of Nokia ( I have owned only a Nokia all my life, eventhough I have had brief stints with all other popular mobiles.)
The N900, just like the N97, promises a lot on paper. It looks good and everything that has been said about it is good. Of course the N900 could be a disappointment like the N97, but the theoritical goodness of the N900 makes it a lot better than the N97. It is not as though the N97 was bad, but it just lagged behind in the OS department. The hardware, like any high end Nokia, was awesome and I just loved the camera.
Maemo to me is the new Symbian. I will keep my fingers crossed and hope that Maemo moves ahead leaps and bounds and can take on the Android and iPhone. If it fails in that, I will be praying for Nokia to start making Android phone, since I dare not leave Nokia. I love their phones!
